Alex Pretti

This weekend we lost another kind, gentle soul. He was killed by ICE. Alex, along with Renee before him, was out supporting our Minnesota community, looking out for our neighbors. It looks like the last thing that Alex did was to try to help another person, who had been pushed to the ground by ICE agents. Many tributes by family, friends and those who met him through his work as an ICU nurse at the VA have been coming in.

I know you have probably already seen this video, but I want to post it here as a tribute to Alex. It speaks to who he really was.

When we are inundated by the lies of the Trump administration, who seem to be intent on smearing an innocent man in order to cover their own incompetence and lack of moral character, we must remind ourselves of the good in the world. It is the good in America which is what really made this country great. Something we should not forget.

RIP Alex.

I'm curious about who started shouting "gun, gun" when Pretti's gun was already in the hands of a federal agent halfway 'cross the street.

Yes, rather like waiving a red flag at a bull.

Different theory.  There's a habit amongst a certain type of cop to start yelling "gun, gun, gun" after they decide they've had enough of some bastard who's not proving sufficiently afraid of them.  It makes it easier to later claim that they thought they were defending themselves.  (And, if they get lucky, they might even find a gun in the vicinity later--and if they're not lucky they might create some luck--some of them keep their own "drop" guns for use as convenient.)
I want to know who started yelling about the gun after it was gone.  It may be that the gun we've seen was Pretti's gun.  Probably was, but I'm not certain of that yet.  Anybody know to whom it was last registered?  Why aren't the folks from ICE harping on Pretti's gun habits?

"President Donald Trump’s MAGA base, known for its aversion
to U.S. involvement in foreign wars, has embraced the
administration’s aggressive use of military force abroad and
      would strongly support more.
"A new POLITICO poll reveals 65 percent of Trump voters
support the U.S. taking military action against at least one of
several potential target countries, including Iran, Greenland,
      Cuba, Colombia, China and Mexico."

I fear we can expect similar conversions on the question of Trump's use of military force against protestors within the United States.
But, in the meantime:  Trump is ratcheting up the rhetoric with regards to Iran.

I just listened to Homan speak. Not impressed. Very much pandering to Trump and MAGA. We'll see...

Homan isn't there to impress you.  He's on a mission to impress Trump.

It sounds like they arrested Don Lemon and another Minnesota journalist for their presence at the protest at a church in Minnesota. Apparently covering protests in a church is now illegal.

Word is going around that the video showing Pretti kicking a taillight and possibly spitting on an agent was doctored by AI.

Word is also going around that the feds are tracking the users of that Signal app who are using it to organize responses to ICE activity. Wasn't that the same app Hegseth used when he talked to his wife and others about classified operations?

Lynnette In Minnesota said...

Oops, poor wording there. Not "another" Minnesota journalist. "A" Minnesota journalist. That wording implies Don Lemon is from Minnesota, which I don't think is the case. We would be happy to claim him, but it wouldn't be accurate.

      Lee C.   ―   U.S.A.      said...

They been chasing this arrest for over a week now.  As I understand it, DHS managed to get a grand jury indictment against Lemon and the others after a couple of federal judges refused to sign arrest warrants on the basis of charges written up at the DoJ.

The Trump administration is throwing quite a bit in the way of both prestige and resources at crushing the protests against its anti-immigrant campaign.
I suppose this could be viewed as proof of their commitment to to the white nationalist cause.  But I'm worried that they also view it as a test bed for their larger effort to crush the protests yet to come if and when Trump elects to implement the plan to overstay his second term.

I'm fairly skeptical about the claim that the old video of Petti kicking out the taillight is an AI fake.  (However, I am curious about what preceded the footage shown.  Something got him wired up.)
And he spat on the vehicle (probably aiming at a window, and a face on the other side of that window), not on an agent.

Lynnette In Minnesota said...

I don't have a verified source for the AI claim. I am kind of suspicious of that claim too. The family confirms Pretti had the altercation with the agents. Yes, I too am curious as to what happened prior to his actions.

I met someone whose husband had him for a nurse. She said he went out of his way to help them. He was a good person.

      "He was a good person."

And they murdered him for not being afraid.

They have released the 5 year old boy and his father they snatched Jan. 20th. They are back in Minnesota. A small win.

Hmmm...is it my imagination, or are cracks widening in the MAGA front? That special election in Texas in a district Trump won by 17% goes to a Democrat by 14%? Now I am hearing that people in Texas are coming out and complaining about their electric bills. And they are placing the blame where it belongs, on the Republicans who have not allowed the necessary infrastructure to be built.

I was reading the other day that the shipping tonnage at the harbor in Duluth is at its lowest since 1939. I wonder, will they start to notice the complete mess Trump has made of our trade policy? Maybe when they can't buy what they want at Walmart for a price they can afford.

Not your imagination.

It strikes me that the kidnapping of Nancy Guthie has been a huge distraction for the news media.

Weird notes, no proof of life. Was it a burglary gone bad? Were the notes fake? Probably likely not a good outcome for the Guthrie family. No meds for this long for Nancy isn't good, unless this was well planned and the kidnappers have meds for her. That would imply someone with very close knowledge of Nancy.

      Lee C.   ―   U.S.A.      said...

I haven't been following the Nancy Guthrie story beyond skimming the headlines.  From those I'd gotten the impression that the kidnappers weren't responding to pleas for communication about a possible ransom.  I took that to mean that there was little hope she was still alive.

Lynnette In Minnesota said...

They released some video and stills they got from Nancy's Nest camera before the guy disconnected it. He was masked up, of course. But he knew there was a camera there.

Lynnette In Minnesota said...

Ok, scratch that, he may not have known about the camera. He appears to try to block it. He also thought by removing it any pictures would be removed. Maybe not as "techy" as they thought.

It seems there was a special election in Louisiana recently. The Democrat won.

      Lee C.   ―   U.S.A.      said...

The Louisiana State Rep special election was held to replace a retiring Democratic state senator.  May not be a real big deal that a Democrat won the same parish/precinct again.

Meantime:  The House of Representatives passed a rule advancing a vote of condemnation of Trump's recent tariffs against Canadian goods.  Mike Johnson has been fighting this for months, and finally lost.  (Trump can veto it, and they don't have a veto-proof majority, but it's significant that they finally managed to pass the bill disapproving the tariffs.  The Senate has passed similar legislation several times, but this is the first time Johnson has lost his edge in the House.  Now Trump will very likely have to veto it.)

A D.C. grand jury rejected a DoJ effort to indict on criminal charges six Democratic senators (including Mark Kelly of Arizona and Elissa Slotkin of Michigan) who recorded a video reminding members of the armed forces that they were under no legal compulsion to obey obviously illegal orders.  The Department of "Trump's Justice" sought criminal charges and the grand jury defied them, refused to indict the subject senators in spite of the government's request.  Politico

Noncompliance with a fascist regime. A tactic that has been used before. Doesn't have to be major, every little bit helps.

So, good that a Democrat kept that seat and good that a grand jury stood up and said enough.

We in Minnesota are still doing our little bit.

Lynnette In Minnesota said...

And good that people in the House finally stood up against some of the tariffs which are hamstring our economy.

"Hamstringing"

Trump's EPA has finally come out and formally repealed the 2009 agency "finding" that greenhouse gases constituted "pollution" that could be regulated under the Clean Air Act.  As an unreconstructed tree hugger type, I'm firmly opposed to this decision.  But I'm appalled at America's younger generations, who'll now have to live with the consequences and ought to be out in the streets in force protesting this decision, but aren't.

They are rolling us back a hundred years. The apathy of Americans is astounding.

It sounds like ICE will be withdrawing from Minnesota. Can't happen too soon.

They don't take well to losing.  They will be searching for some means to strike back.

`They have already tried extortion. I guess we will see.

The Supreme Court has struck down Trump's tariffs.

Trump says he has a plan "B".

      Lee C.   ―   U.S.A.      said...

Preliminary indications are that "plan B" includes keeping the money the federal government has pulled in via the illegal tariffs.
