Media Literacy
When I was in junior high I loved the tabloids. You could pick one up at the checkout line in the supermarket anywhere. They had so many flashy, and really not very factual, articles. You can still find them, although they usually revolve around celebrities and not alien landings. Today, of course, young people get their information from the internet. But the one thing tabloids had in common with today’s internet is that facts were not always present. Facts did not sell papers, shock value did. Today it’s how do you get someone to click on your page? The solution? Clickbait, make the headline as extreme as you can. Back then it was a more innocent time where tabloids couldn’t do much harm. Today, however, we are seeing disinformation proliferate on social media platforms to the point where people are unsure of what is real and what isn’t. It can cause real world consequences that impact our lives and our future. Propagandists, both foreign and domestic, are using these platforms to further their own agendas, not ours. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to make up my own mind about things, not let someone else do it for me.
So how to counter this? I was very pleased to see that there are actually people who are trying. See the article and included video below:
This librarian is right, it doesn’t matter what beliefs you may have. What is important is basing those beliefs on facts. It may take some double checking but in the end finding the truth is like finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Someone once said, knowledge is power. They were right. Because knowledge will prevent a person from being used by those seeking power. In this ever more complex and dangerous world we need to be more aware of what is real and what isn’t.

Seems to be a glitch in the system here.
Re: 'glitch in the system'
I posted a comment on this subject this morning. Said it took, showed me the comment. Then when I hit refresh it's vanished. (I made repeated attempts.) Just to show you that you aren't the only one it does that to.
Was it this one? This looked like the first one you tried to post.

It is my considered opinion (and I have given this question considerable consideration) that the rise of 'disinformation' can be traced directly back to the candidacy and the presidency of one Ronald Wilson Reagan. Reagan's chief opposition for the Republican nomination was one George Herbert Walker Bush. Bush famously described Reagan's economic policy as 'voodoo economics', and Bush was right. Reagan had made it all up in his very own head--a political economic theory dreamed up by a "B" movie actor with a minimal financial education. He described the way he wished macroeconomics would work to support his preferred socio-political vision for the ‛shining city on a hill’ that he wished America had been, with happy endings for all except 'the bad guys' (who would get their comeuppances in the closing minutes of the final reels), just like in the "B" movies from which he made his money.
But his very own imagined up economic theory didn't work in the real world, doesn't work in the real world. It had never worked before; it didn't work then; it wasn't ever gonna work. Bush was right--and 'voodoo economics' was being rather mild in its criticism.
And the Republicans in political office knew it was all BS. They had real economists on their payrolls--guys who knew how things worked. But their imaginary economics won elections. (Won twice for Reagan.) So they all boarded the bandwagon. And FoxNews was conceived specifically to counter the voices of the real economists who'd taken to the airwaves of the soon to be vilified 'mainstream media' to explain why 'Reaganomics' was unadulterated bullshit.
That was the time when one of our major political parties intentionally chose to sell what they knew were a pack of lies to their own voters. And they never looked back.
And now we have the internet and the lies are cheap and ubiquitous. In Reagan's day one had to have enough money to launch a FoxNews Network. Nowadays they only need enough money to launch a webpage. Ain't gonna be no turnin' back now.
This has been building since Reagan. This is his legacy.
That was it. You see any reason it should be getting dropped? I couldn't figure it out.
I don't know. We've both posted longer comments.
It looks like the GOP is going to have Trump for their nominee again. Just another sign that not enough people vote in the primaries. We get stuck with the extremist candidates.
As for Reagan and his economic theory I don't think any of the Republicans are any better. Yes, I agree that we need more fiscal responsibility but they just pay lip service to that. As evidenced by what they passed when Trump was in office. They don't really care about a balanced budget when it comes to keeping their supporters happy. You can see that even now with their efforts to defund the IRS.
"As evidenced by what they passed when Trump was in office."
Republican reluctance to cut spending did not originate with Trump.
Republicans don't really want to cut spending. They want to force the Democrats to cut spending. Which is a different thing entirely. They've got a long history of trying to force that outcome. (Republicans want to cut taxes. That's popular with their base and with voters in general. Cutting spending, not so much.)

Me too.
The Biden administration has just yesterday officially requested Congress approve the long-delayed sale of our F16s to Türkiye. They were in favor of that sale all along, but Erdoğan was being a dickhead over Sweden joining NATO, so it got delayed. Now Sweden's been formally approved for NATO membership by Erdoğan's government, and even Viktor Orbán is finally onboard (I don't know what muscle they used on him, but…while we're on that subject…after Erdoğan's approval, Orbán quickly invited the Swedish Prime Minister to come to Budapest to discuss Orbán's remaining objections (i.e. to grovel before Orbán) and he received a flat "NO" in response--no explanation, just "NO". Gotta think somebody put an alternative scenario out there for Orbán to consider, and Orbán promptly folded.)
So, now we're officially in favor of selling the airplanes to Türkiye.
(I'm guessing Ukraine gets their F16s first; maybe Greece does too.)

Closer to home: Nikki Hailey's campaign seems to have gone quiet since the loss in New Hampshire. They're not makin' any noise nor any news. I'm trying to figure out what to make of that, if anything. (Although I see they have ordered a $4 million plus advertising buy in South Carolina, but that could be yet canceled.)
"KYIV, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Ukrainian drones attacked a Rosneft-

It's looking more and more like we're not going to see any more aid to Ukraine until after the November election at the earliest (assuming Ukraine can hold on that long). Biden didn't realize when he agreed to negotiate on 'security' at our southern border that Mike Johnson doesn't want, probably will not allow, any border agreement to pass the House. Johnson seems to be convinced that keeping up the border fight--keeping up the rallying cry of "open borders" is the only way the Republicans will be able to keep their majority in the House come November. He can't afford to let that fight get resolved. Biden isn't usually naïve, but he seems to have thought Johnson was operating in good faith. And now we're gonna pay for that mistake. So will Ukraine.
And, the Swedish Prime Minister, in a sort of 'olive branch' moment, suggested he would meet with Viktor Orbán in Brussels in early February (regularly scheduled E.U. meeting) and possibly might also visit him in Budapest sometime after that. Diplomacy.
Nikki Haley has been hammering on Trump's mistake in confusing her with Pelosi, revisiting cognitive tests for those candidates over a certain age. Hopefully that will resonate. Despite Biden's age I still think he is pretty savvy on many things. He has always been more capable than Trump purely from a presidential duties standpoint. Never mind the obvious personality defects of Trump.
It is possible that Ukraine shot down a Russian plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war for a prisoner exchange.
If this is true I would wonder on where the Ukrainians got the intel that it was carrying munitions. I wouldn't put it past the Russians to plant that info and let the Ukrainians shoot down their own people.
Mike Johnson needs to go. He. was always going to be worse than McCarthy. That any Republicans that claim to be moderate voted for him was disgusting.
Johnson is part of the faction that doesn't really want a democracy. He wants an autocracy with himself in charge.
I think someone did a good job with negotiations or arm twisting to get Sweden's joining NATO ok'd.

New wrinkle developing. The Biden administration has basically ignored Trump's attempts to kill the border security/Ukraine assistance deal, treating Trump's efforts there as mere background noise. They notably neglected to even mention that Trump was working against them on this when discussing the situation with reporters yesterday. That may mean they think there's still a chance to make the deal work and don't want to force it into becoming a Trumpkan 'loyalty test' if they can avoid that. More likely it means they got no other ideas just now and so they're plugging along doggedly, waiting for somebody else to get the blame (claim the credit?) for killing off an independent European Ukraine.
Third possibility is that Biden wants to keep the discussions alive on the theory that miracles occasionally do occur, and they got nothin' to lose now by holding out for a miracle.
While we're on the subject of long shots… Ukraine is prepping for an expected (but not yet scheduled) state visit by Viktor Orbán. Reuters
And the Republican National Committee has withdrawn that draft resolution which would have declared Trump to be the 'presumptive nominee' at their national meeting next week.
There is apparently a challenger to Putin, Boris Nadezhdin. He wouldn't win since the fix is in for Putin. But what is interesting is that he has been getting large turnouts in various places to sign petitions to put him on the balllot.
I think this agreement on the border that has been created puts Trump and the GOP in a bad light. They have been the ones that have been pushing for this, but now the House Rebublicans are not willing to deal because Trump is calling around telling them to stuff it so he can use it as a campaign issue. That guy is a real sleaze.
"…this agreement on the border that has been created puts
Trump and the GOP in a bad light."
I'm not sure enough people are paying attention. (You're paying attention, obviously, but you're not enough people.) I guess it's the campaign's job to remedy that situation.

The reëlection campaign has achieved political dominance rather early this year, at least for the Trumpkan/Republicans, who think that they won't have to answer for actually governing these remaining months of 2024. (We'll find out later if that plays out as they think it will.)

I think that Zaluzhny thing has been brewing for some time. The question is, what will it mean for the future of the war? I hope Zelenskyy has someone capable to replace him. I would hate to see him go the way of Putin, thinking he can run things on his own.
"I think that Zaluzhny thing has been brewing for some time."
I believe you're correct on that.
But you may be mistaken with the Putin analogy. I recall Zaluzhny was lately making public policy pronouncements to the media. And also I recalled Truman being publicly prodded by MacArthur during the Korean War and also recall the grief that McClellan gave to Lincoln during our Civil War. I'm hoping those are better analogies. But, only time will tell.
(I would note that both McClellan and MacArthur harbored political ambitions. McClellan ran against Lincoln in the 1864 election; MacArthur sought to run for President in 1952, but proved no match for Eisenhower in pursuit of the Republican nomination that year.)

And it's a new day every mornin'….
The Biden administration has since ungloved--issued a strategy memo just yesterday that called out Trump and Mike Johnson as well. If they're not gonna get any assistance for Ukraine (and it looks like that's dead for the time being), then they're gonna try to score political points against the Trumpkan/Republican coalition. After all, there is an election coming up. And Johnson did proclaim the Senate's compromise bill dead on arrival in the House before the Senate even managed to agree on a compromise bill--seemingly an uncompromising stand there by Johnson.
Biden has quietly gotten several compromises through Congress in his first term, but this is a significant failure to conquer the status quo.
Seems he's decided to not be quiet about it. That's not gonna help Ukraine though.
I was unaware until this morning, but it seems that Donald Trump is developing a rage against pop singer Taylor Swift. NYMag (I had heard 'bout the QAnon loons developing a full blown crazy over her and the football player, supposedly gonna end with her endorsing Joe Biden during the half-time show at the Super Bowl.)

I'm not sure what they used on Viktor Orbán here, whether threats or cajoling, but this is big cave for Orbán. It means the E.U. can bypass the clumsy procedure he forced them into last year (individual national pledges 'bundled' sort of).
Perhaps this will help boost the morale of Ukrainians watching our Congress currently running in failure mode.
I know it is hard to get the American people's attention, but this stonewalling by Johnson at the behest of Trump is a legitimate campaign issue. It is clear by this stance that the Republicans in the House do not have the good of the United States and her people at heart. It is about time that we remove self serving elected officials from office.
I was unaware until this morning, but it seems that Donald Trump is developing a rage against pop singer Taylor Swift.
Lol! I was going to mention that the Swifties could make a dent in this election if Taylor Swift were to come out and say she doesn't like Trump. He and his supporters have apparently noticed this too.
As for their nasty rumors my guess is she'll just shake it off.
Perhaps this will help boost the morale of Ukrainians watching our Congress currently running in failure mode.
I hope so. It is so horrible that our dysfunctional Congress is doing real harm to such courageous people. Personally I think Mike Johnson and Company should take a nice long walk on the frontlines over there so they can see for themselves what their genuflecting to Trump is doing.
It seems that Russia lost another ship. They also seem to have misplaced Gerasimov. He hasn't been seen in a month.
The NewYorkTimes posted an article that purports to describe the process by which Viktor Orbán was brought to heel. Threats and cajoling.

"They also seem to have misplaced Gerasimov."
I hadn't noticed that they were ever looking for him.
The Ukrainians are.
Zelenskyy's office has denied the rumors about an imminent firing of Valery Zaluzhny. They say there's no such plan in the works. There's been no such notice given to Zaluzhny. (They conspicuously do not say his job is secure.) According to the AssociatedPress Zaluzhny has been told to either get with the program as outlined by his civilian superiors or turn in his resignation, and he has so far refused to do either.
The Ukrainians have set fire to an oil refinery in Volgograd, Russia (better known to history as Stalingrad); another drone attack. Reuters
And the International Court of Justice (a/k/a the ICJ or "World Court") has ruled that the genocide case brought by Ukraine against Russia can go forward. Reuters
If Zelenskyy dismisses Zaluzhny, a very popular guy in Ukraine, it would free Zaluzhny to do other things. Maybe even run for president.
Looks like the Senate has made public the border deal. Let the fighting begin.
"If Zelenskyy dismisses Zaluzhny…"
You are quite right. I believe Zaluzhny has already made that same calculation and concluded that it would be much better to challenge Zelensky for the presidency as a 'dismissed' general than as a general who walked away from his office during a hot war, and he is now trying his best to get himself 'dismissed' (without being vulgarly obvious about it).
Kyrsten Sinema, James Lankford, and Chris Murphy have released the final text of their effort at a border bill. The Senate hasn't agreed to squat yet.
Developing conventional wisdom (after preliminary head counts) is that the border security/military assistance bill (from above ↑↑) will fail to clear the 60 vote anti-filibuster supermajority needed to advance past an expected Trumpkan/Republican filibuster in the Senate.
Of course it won't. It was always a long shot. Let the dysfunction continue.
House Speaker Johnson racked up two big losses yesterday. His stand-alone bill for military support for Israel went down in flames and his attempt to impeach Biden's Secretary of Homeland Security failed as well (but only by one vote; he may try that one again later).
I s'pect his crazie Trumpkin contingent will begin to lose patience with him here 'fore too long ('specially if his second attempt to impeach Secretary Mayorkas results in a second failure to launch).
He'll likely have to do some serious pandering to counter that, unfortunate, as he was already pandering more than enough to suit me.
Keep up the dysfunction and people may actually notice. One can at least hope.
I have noticed that some Trump supporters who comment on Ukrainian vlogs are kind of quiet. At least one Ukrainian vlogger has been critical of Trump and the Republicans. He calls a spade a spade.
A Russian ICBM factory in Izhevsk is apparently on fire after a rather large explosion. TASS is reporting that it occurred during regular rocket engine tests. Hmmm....others are reporting something else.

I talked with an immigrant from Liberia who has been here 40 years and has her citizenship. She is ready to move back to Liberia.
The Senate just voted 67-27 to advance the foreign military aid bill (Ukraine/Israel/Taiwan) to the floor for debate. That's a filibuster proof margin. (There'll be another filibuster opportunity when it's time to cut off debate and go to a final vote on the bill. But this is a significant hurdle to have overcome--Trump was dead set against it.)
I saw that. At least there are still some sane people left.
Shoulda seen this coming. The Republicans instituted something like eight separate 'investigations' of Hillary Clinton, supposedly in relation the Muslim attack on our embassy outpost in Benghazi, Libya. I can only hope this is a harbinger of things to come.
Reuters reports that Russia made several back channel attempts in 2023 to begin discussions with the United States about declaring a cease fire in Ukraine. (Cease fire in place, with Russia holding on to the Ukrainian territory that it's already overrun.) The Biden administration rebuffed all contacts that suggested opening any such dialogue without the participation of Ukraine and so the various Russian contact efforts came to naught. They'll have to wait and hope for Trump to win in November. (And maybe try to help him again.)

But, the House Republicans meanwhile voted again to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and it passed this time by a single vote. But, the House Republicans meanwhile voted again to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and it passed this time by a single vote.
A waste of time. They could have got a deal on the border but they choose to continue with the histrionics.

They say timing is everything. I'm just glad they managed to get rid of a Republican seat. I hope we get rid of more in November.

Just a Putin puppet. He has done nothing to further government policy that protects and defends the American people. That includes the failed border deal.
The Russians lost another big military transport ship in the Black Sea this morning.
I saw that. At least there are still people willing to stand up and fight for democracy. Slava Ukraini!
Headlines these last twenty four hours ain't been particularly optimistic 'bout the House taking up any military assistance legislation, neither the Senate passed bill nor a so-far entirely hypothetical House engineered alternative.
Johnson seems to think his best move is to dither around and waste as much time as he can, thereby preventing any of his factions from deciding that it's finally time to eject him from the Speakership. To this end, House Republicans 'negotiating' with one another ad infinitum over the outlines of a bill they'll never pass anyway seems to be Johnson's most probable next move. (He tried to arrange a meeting with Biden so he could bitch 'bout Biden for awhile, but the Biden administration wouldn't coöperate.) Still, I'm not sure he can keep this farce going for more than maybe a couple of weeks or there'bouts.
(Lookin' seriously like Johnson is a man without a plan except to prolong his sit in the Speaker's chair (waiting patiently, more or less, for a miracle to be engineered by his Trumpkan god perhaps); and he seems to think stalling everything on the agenda is the route least likely to get him booted before that miracle is delivered.)

The latest delaying tactic is to go on vacation. The Republicans are on holiday for the next two weeks. Isn't that special?
On a more positive note, the judge in Trump's fraud trial fined him and his companies $335 million. I wonder if he can get that out of his cult members?
"The latest delaying tactic is to go on vacation."
Yes, and when they get back they'll have roughly a week to figure out how to keep our own government financed. The current short-term stop-gap funding extension expires in a novel 'rolling shutdown' fashion with deadlines on March 1st and March 8th (the purpose of which bifurcation nobody's ever understood 'cause Johnson never could come up with a remotely reasonable explanation for that), and Johnson seemingly has no clue what he's going to do with these new deadlines. (His current plan seems to be to go ostrich on the problem--head in the sand and pretend to not see it coming.)

Not quick 'nuff. (Maybe not at all if he loses to Biden in November--don't think they're signed on for losing again). He's got 30 days to post a bond to stay 'execution' on the judgement, even if he files an appeal; ain't enough time to gather in that much money from the dedicated Trumpkins, and the RNC only has $8 million cash on hand. And, (supposedly) 'campaign donations' can't be used to pay personal debts anyway.
I wonder how he's gonna deal with it when sheriffs start seizing his assets to pay his debts. Might be a tantrum happen.

Putin ordered the town taken by March, before the Russian election. The Russians moved massive amounts of forces into this one area to do so. The Ukrainians were not just outmatched for ammunition they were way outmatched by soldiers. The Russians used their "meat wave" tactics, throwing their soldiers against the Ukrainian lines until they were worn down and had to withdraw to avoid large losses. As it was they did lose some soldiers that were wounded and had to be left behind.
To do this the Russian incurred huge losses in men and equipment.
There is speculation by one Ukrainian vlogger that once the Russian election is over Putin will declare another mobilization of Russians to refill the ranks.
I had heard that the Ukrainians bagged some Russian jets. I had heard 3, but 4 sounds much nicer. Speculation is that they used a Patriot air defense system to do so. One of those that is mobile.
Supposedly Russia can produce 20 planes a year. Of course, if their factory workers are fighting on the front line, that may prove not to be the case...
