After the 4th of July

This year I did not do an annual post on the 4th of July, because I just wasn’t feeling the desire to celebrate our day of Independence when it appears we are going backwards to a time before we had representative government.

Our struggles for independence from the rule of a king started with something as simple as a complaint of being taxed without our input. You remember, right? It was called the Boston Tea Party.

A short overview of what lead up to the “Boston Tea Party”:

While you may be familiar with a movement in the recent past called the Tea Party, it was, perhaps, a misnomer. For the Tea Party was a bit of a precursor to MAGA, the group that supports Donald Trump. Or at least they were part of the Republican Party, which has veered so far to the right as to be unrecognizable.

So now that brings us to today, where we have the “Trump Tariffs” and his “Big, Beautiful Bill”. The tariffs are nothing more than a tax on goods that are imported into this country. That tax will be passed on down the food chain until it reaches the end users, which are you and me. This will lead to reciprocal tariffs by our trading partners on the goods we sell them. Both of these taxes will affect us through higher costs of goods we purchase and hurt our companies that sell overseas affecting their markets and our jobs. After Trump’s first term our agriculture markets took some time to recover from his tariffs.

The “Big, Beautiful Bill” is nothing more than a transfer of wealth to the higher income strata of American society. It has made Trump’s tax cuts for the wealthy permanent and cut social programs which help lower income Americans survive. This while eliminating thousands of jobs in the public sector which were in place in departments set up to help our government function smoothly. While you may not have seen the ramifications of these Trump and Republican polices, unless you are one of those fired or rounded up and deported, you will eventually. Someone once said that the United States economy is like a battleship, it doesn’t turn on a dime. And, despite what you may have thought, it was doing quite well under Biden, when compared to other countries.

So where does that leave us? I hold out little hope that the true MAGA followers will ever realize what they have done by supporting Trump and his enablers. Even as many lose their jobs and their families sink further into poverty. They have drunk the Kool-Aid of the Trump cult. If those who voted for Trump, voted third party, or simply sat out the election do not come to understand what they are throwing away, then this country is in serious trouble.

So it was hard to celebrate the 4th of July this year. But, I cannot leave this post with such a depressing ending. Because I do see signs out there of that America which stood together in times of trouble, the America we fought for in our revolution, the America that gives hope for our future.

On July 4th there was a catastrophic flood in Texas. A short video:

They call this a historic flood, but I suspect it will become more of the norm in our future. But what we saw, again, was the strength of those who were affected. We saw people helping each other. We saw some of the grit and determination that this country was founded on. I don’t know if the people there were Trump supporters or not, but they stood together as Americans and that is what really made this country great. It is what we need to get back to, helping all of our citizens, not just those who are fortunate to be born to wealthy parents, and have no clue as to what many Americans are going through. My heart goes out to those affected by those Texas floods. Even as I write this it appears that more flooding may be on the way.

I just ran across this video tonight and want to add it to this post, because the point made is important.  What do we really want our country to be?

Trump has made his 'big' announcement regarding Russia's continued war against Ukraine.  Tariffs.  Maybe tariffs, in 50 days.  Or maybe TACOs instead.

Quite curious.
Trump is very much not known for his loyalty to his minions.
I would guess that Trump is actually standing behind the idea that there should be no further disclosures of 'the Epstein files' and he's quite content for outrage over that decision to be directed mostly towards Bondi rather than at himself.

Surprisingly, Lara Trump, who's contemplating a run for the Senate to replace Thom Tillis from North Carolina has said she believes further disclosures will soon be forthcoming on the Epstein questions.  Politico  Seems a little off message.

Changing subjects:  Trump has now dissed the Congressional efforts to impose a new round of sanctions on Russia, after announcing his own version instead (which version drove the Russian stock market up not down.).  The Senate version has 85 co-sponsors on record--well over the veto-proof level.  But Senate Majority Leader John Thune has decided to not bring that legislation up for a vote now that Trump has casually dismissed it.  Politico

Apparently, according to Trump, the Epstein "list" was made up by Obama and Comey.

Blaming Obama and Comey is something of a reach, but they are Trumpkins.  Maybe they'll decide to believe it.

The cracks in MAGA appear to be growing. Even Joe Rogan is starting to speak out against the ICE raids. The Epstein thing has legs. It seems to be the one thing the left and right agree on. Everyone wants to know the dirt.

Lynnette In Minnesota said...

But the real question is will half of the country's flirtation with fascism end, and if so will it end before there is no way back?

  Lee C.   ―   U.S.A.    said...

      "The Epstein thing has legs."

The "Epstein thing" is a conspiracy fantasy gone awry.  The QAnon contingent has gone mainstream in the Trumpkan/Republican party, and this is one of their fever dream fantasies come back to bite Trump in the ass.  (I must say I'm hugely amused by that.)  I don't think Epstein would have kept "a client list".  (This is not to say that Trump's name doesn't appear prominently in Epstein's records or in the investigation of Epstein, just that I don't think Epstein would have kept a 'client list' as such.)
In the meantime….  Trump has been telling congressmen that he's about ready to fire Jerome Powell, head of the fed.  (And then told the press that such a move was "highly unlikely".)  It's a potential distraction from the Epstein fuss, so he's feeding the headline machine there.

As for the cracks growing larger, well, that was inevitable.  The Italians came to regret Mussolini; the Germans finally repented of their fawning over Hitler.  I'm just wondering, like you, if our reckoning will come while there's still time to turn back America's rising tide of fascism.  I'm not sure 'bout that.  I think we'll know shortly.
If the Democrats win a majority in the Senate in the mid-terms they'll almost certainly take the House as well.  Will Trump allow that to happen?  Or will he declare that to be a national disaster and a national emergency and attempt to impose martial law at that point?  And if the Democrats don't take the Senate, the reckoning might be put off a little longer, maybe too long.

                           ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
And…  It looks like the tariff letters are going to come to a political head fairly soon.  The Epstein questions may soon have to compete with outrage and unsteadiness from the big money people on Wall Street (usually a Republican constituency).

I'd seen signs of that as well.  A big part of his problem is his insistance that he was going to target rapists and murderers and gangsters and all that like he promised he would.  But those folks tend to avoid cops, to hide from the law.  They're harder to find.
Worker bees are much easier to find.  So the ICE agents have been leaning into raids on employers, farmers' fields, packing plants, construction sites, etc.  Churches are also fertile hunting grounds.  Immigrants tend to congregate in immigrant-friendly churches.  ICE can catch bunches of immigrants at once, accuse them of being criminals at church and deport them.  They're also grabbing some immigrants as they show up for their previously scheduled court appearances.
The public is catching on to this.

Hackers exploited a major security flaw in widely used Microsoft server software to launch a global attack on government agencies and businesses in the past few days, breaching U.S. federal and state agencies, universities, energy companies and an Asian telecommunications company, according to state officials and private researchers. The U.S. government and partners in Canada and Australia are investigating the compromise of SharePoint servers, which provide a platform for sharing and managing documents. Tens of thousands of such servers are at risk, experts said, and Microsoft has issued no patch for the flaw, leaving victims around the world scrambling to respond.

I would have thought it would have been front page news.

  Lee C.   ―   U.S.A.    said...

Trump's been engaged in an almost frantic effort to generate headlines of late.
He's accused Barrack Obama of "treason", even opened an investigation against him personally.  Going further against Obama, he's made the brand new claim that Obama and other favorite Democratic targets "made up" the Epstein files.  He's releasing the FBI files on the FBI bugging of Martin Luther King ᴊʀ.  He's made an in-person tour of the construction site of the Federal Reserve Board's headquarters renovation (which renovation actually long preceded Jerome Powell's tenure).  Etc.
This is all being snapped up by Trump's captive media (FoxNews, OANN, Radio-Right-Wing,…that batch) and drowns out any coverage they might give to the Epstein saga.
But none of it seems to be effectively competing with the Epstein headlines on mainstream media.  This does not bother Trump; his people don't pay attention to mainstream media; they have siloed themselves away from that source of information.  However:  Most importantly, the internet conspiracy silos that usually support Trump, they ain't buyin' into the distractions this time.  That's what's got Trump all up in a lather over the continued Epstein headlines.

                           ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Changing topic:
Trump's special envoy team has withdrawn from negotiations with Hamas for a permanent peace agreement, claiming that Hamas doesn't want peace.  That's probably true.  Hamas' charter calls for them to destroy Israel and chase the Jews back into the sea.  That's the stated primary goal of Hamas and it's not been realized yet.  Doesn't sound like a peaceful endeavor.  Apparently this has finally pierced Trump's silo.

But…, I was thinkin' that probably Trump has finally just given up on that Nobel Peace Prize he'd been anglin' for.

Trump has prepared his counterstrike against the Europeans gangin' up on him.  He's scheduled an hour with him and his crew on Zelenskyy alone (including a 'photo-op', which is where it blew up last time) before he lets the European leaders join the conversation.

Counterstrike by the Europeans; they started showing up early, before the meeting with Zelenskyy commenced.  (No doubt they'll be cooling their heels in the White House equivalent of a network 'green room'.)

Well, the Europeans got out of the White House without a blowup.  I'd say their plan to backstop Zelenskyy was mostly successful.
Trump says the next step is a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy, and that he's gonna to work on arranging that.

We'll see….

I heard something the other day on one of the Ukrainian YouTube channels that Belarus was moving troops to the Ukrainian border again.

Trump was touting some sort of security guarantee for Ukraine, but has since made it clear that would not include American boots on the ground.

This post most properly belongs in this thread rather than the new one:

It seems that Putin is not going to coöperate with Trump's desire for a quick meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy (with or without the attendance of Trump himself).  Politico  Makes Trump's position on 'security guarantees' rather a moot point.

Reuters has noted an announcement by Belarus and Iran about strengthening their military ties.  (There's also a story goin' 'round 'bout the Iranians being not too pleased they didn't get any more help from the Russians when Netanyahu and Trump decided to bomb the shit outt them.  I'm not sure how that fits into this story though.)
